My Journey

My name is Megan Helms. I am family oriented and love to read and watch films. This is my second time at SPCC. I originally graduated with an Associates Degree in Medical Office Administration. Working in the medical field appealed to me, but I could not handle the thought of drawing blood. The office aspect was the perfect fit. These skills helped me, eventually, manage the office of a multi-million dollar manufacturing company and handle their accounting needs.

While working in the office, my calling to work in the medical field came back in full force. I missed being able to help others. After speaking with my sister, who is a massage therapist, she suggested that I look into therapeutic massage. I could help others in a one on one atmosphere that is more relaxed than a typical office. At this point, I decided to enroll into the Therapeutic Massage program. I excel in Swedish Massage, because it seems that I put people at ease. I felt that this skill should be used towards individuals that need that influence in their life, which is why I plan on specializing in Prenatal, Oncology, and Geriatric Massage.

I needed a career that would not feel like a dead end, and that would allow me to have a good balance between work life and personal life, so that I could continue to take care of my disabled family members. I wanted a career that would offer flexibility while being able to maintain a living wage. I wanted a career where I could help others who would appreciate it. Therapeutic Massage is the perfect fit for all of those needs.
